HAR GHAR TIRANGA MOVEMENT
Overview
For the occasion of 75th independence day, August 15 2022, PM Narendra Modi has urged the people to support the Har Ghar Tiranga Movement. This campaign was launched on July 22 2022. The aim of this campaign is to celebrate and commemorate 75 glorious years of Independence of India and showcase patriotism. PM also recalled the historic courage and efforts of those freedom fighters who dreamt of a flag for free India. He also shared details of the committee associated with our Tricolour Flag, and Pandit Nehru who unfurled the first Tricolour.
He said that July 22 has great relevance in our history as on this day in 1947, our National Flag was adopted. In tweets, the PM said, “This year, when we are marking Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, let us strengthen the Har Ghar Tiranga Movement. Hoist the Tricolour or display it in your homes between 13th and 15th August. This movement will deepen our connection with the national flag.”

KEY POINTS
· Narendra Modi launched the “Har Ghar Tiranga” campaign to inspire the people to bring the Tiranga home and hoist it. The main focus behind the campaign is to invoke the feeling of patriotism and to celebrate Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
· State, Union Territories, and Ministries are participating with all hearts in the campaign. SHGs and NGOs from different places are already working towards making Har Ghar Tiranga an iconic campaign in the success path of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. Kupwara in Jammu and Kashmir, and Mandala in Madhya Pradesh, these places are showing themselves to be iconic examples of showcasing people’s participation in this campaign.
· Various events involving people from all age groups will be organized at different locations connected with Freedom Struggle to portray the patriotic feeling and unity of the entire nation.
· The government of India initiated steps to ensure the supply of flags across India.
All Post Offices in the country have been given the responsibility to start selling flags from August 1 2022.
· The government of India has geared up with various e-commerce websites and SHGs to make the process of the supply of the Flag hassle-free.
· People can also participate in a virtual campaign on https://harghartiranga.com/ where ‘Share a Selfie with the flag’ or ‘Pin a Flag’ options are available. The Ministry of Culture has launched this website.
· Soon after its launch, people started participating in this campaign, and over 50,000 events have been successfully conducted across 28 States, 8 UTs, and 150+ countries; it is said that this initiative of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav is one of the largest programs ever organized in terms of participation and scope.
How and who will manufacture such a large number of flags?
· Now, National Flag made of polyester or machine made Flags have been allowed by amending the Flag Code of India, 2002 vide its Order dated 30.12.2021 by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
·The government has set a target of voluntary installation of the national flag on 250 million houses across the country.
· According to Khandelwal, there will be a stock of nearly 40 million flags across the country to fill the gap between the potential demand.
Who manufactures the Tricolour for Red Fort?
· Karnataka Khadi Gramodyog Samyukta Sangha at Hubballi in northern Karnataka supplies the Tricolour to be hoisted atop the Red Fort. This unit was recognized by BIS in 2004, meticulously follows the Flag Code and manufactures only nine specified sizes of the flag
HAR GHAR TIRANGA CAMPAIGN
· This campaign is a part of the 75th Independence Day- Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav- an initiative by the Government of India to encourage people to hoist Tiranga from 13-15 August in their homes to celebrate the 75th year of India’s Independence.
· The motive behind this initiative is to encourage citizens to hoist the national flag and also to invoke patriotism in the hearts of the people by building a personal connection with the national flag, which will lead to greater nation-building.
FLAG CODE OF INDIA AND ITS AMENDMENT
· Flag Code of India 2002 is a set of rules, laws, practices, conventions and instructions that govern the practice of use, display and hoisting of the national flag of India. It came into effect on January 26 2002.
on July 20, 2022, the Flag Code of India 2002 was amended to-
1. Allow the hoisting of the national flag during the day and night. Earlier, the flag could only be hoisted between sunrise and sunset.
2. Now, the public, private organizations or any educational institution can hoist the flag on any day, irrespective of any occasion, provided they are following the rules governing the dignity and honour of the national flag.
3. The previous laws permitted flags to be handspun; hand weaved with silk, khadi, cotton, wool and bunting fabric, but now polyester is also allowed for this campaign.
Background
KKGSS(Karnataka Khadi Gramodyog Samyukta Sangh) was founded on November 1 1957. In 2006, it got certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). And, it is not an easy task to manufacture a national flag; if any defect in the flag is found, be it colour, size, fastness of the colours used for dyeing, thread count, the strength of the yarn, etc. is considered as a serious offence and is liable for a fine or imprisonment or both, as per the provisions of Flag Code of India 2002.
